TikTok Offers The Community Authority to Decrease AI-Generated Content in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This step comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This development coincides with a surge in content created by AI, driven by recent content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that nearly one in 10 of the quickest rising channels on a competing service primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we want to give people the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its network tagged as made with AI. Overall, over 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the app each day, making AI-generated material a minor part of its complete catalog.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they watch by using the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be modified under the tool include news, style, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines require content makers to identify lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the platform will from now on apply an “AI-made” label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also establishing a $2m awareness program for specialists and organizations to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist non-profit groups specializing in educating computer science.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has justified its content review process, amid discussion over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the UK. It is expected to cut 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists expressing worry that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead stated that people-led review would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most distressing content prior to it gets reviewed by people. TikTok announced a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
