"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several famous supporters have openly begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a close trio. Their visuals repeatedly feature them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to make music."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The group are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international audience.

However the band will always be their top priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
