Comeback Medvedev Claims First Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hardcourt

A resurgent the Russian player secured his first championship for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a former world number one, has endured a torrid season, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serving in particular - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and ultimately separating with former trainer Cervara.

Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily advanced in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over opponent Moutet.

This represents the player's initial title after the Rome competition and maiden on a hard court since March of 2023.

Success also signifies he has secured 21 championships at 21 various events.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a competition with my children together, so to get a trophy is particularly special," said ranked player the champion.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the first title I got when my first daughter her name was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in Halle in the past months.

Medvedev's counter-punching play style and regular reactions on the playing surface had led commentators to question if his ability to perform at the top level was over.

But the player has made changes in the past month, making an effort to come to the net and perform positively, backed up by an improved serve.

Medvedev recovered from a break down in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, winning 4 of the last five exchanges to go ahead.

Both players traded break points in the second set before the challenger, striving for his initial ATP Tour championship, took control to create a third set.

Moutet saved four early chances in a competitive deciding set before the Russian secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he earned the title with a shot at the front of the court, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
